A History of Box Elder County by Frederick M. Huchel
This fascinating book gives a comprehensive history of Box Elder County. Many entries are made recounting the life of Myron John.
For example, on page 395 it states, "Myron J. Richards, the first postmaster, recorded that on 18 January 1896* "...Mail went from our new Post Office to Collinston for the first time."

Isabella Mary "Bell" Young Richards
She was baptized on the 12th of April, 1874 in Utah.
At the age of 20 she became the second wife of Myron Jon Richards, son of Franklin Dewy Richards, the apostle and wife, Mary Thompson Richards. She took her endowments out, was sealed to her parents [along with all of her siblings] and sealed to her husband all in the same day- April 29, 1885. Logan Temple. Logan, Cache, Utah.
She bore him five children: Hyrum on the 5th of August, 1886- Elmer Thomas on the 31st of August, 1891- Florence on 3rd of November 1896- Glenn Young on the 17th of February, 1899 and LeGrande born on Sunday, November 1, 1901.
The delivery of LeGrande was difficult. Bell called Myron to rush to her. He had been at a conference and didn't arrive until it was too late. LeGrande was delivered with instruments; born dead and Bell later died at 7pm. She was buried on the 13th of November in Brigham City, Box Elder, Utah.

January, Monday 1: We held a ward entertainment in the forenoon and children’s dance in the afternoon. There were 103 souls present and had a very pleasant time at both sessions. Songs, recitations, dialogues, etc, a pleasant day, a large company, and a good pleasant feeling prevailed.
Tuesday 2: I chored around home receiving Tithing and writing. Cold and foggy. Robert and Bell’s folks returned. School started.
Wednesday 3: I was at home part of the day. Went to Fielding for lumber and to see about getting my Bobs shawed [shaved?]. Weather mild and thawing. Rained during night. Julia and I went to A. H. Gleason’s to get deed made. Rained at night.
Thursday 4: I remained home fixing cellar etc, foggy but mild and thawing.
Friday 5: I remained home, thawing.
Saturday 6: Brother B. Lillywhite went with me to Portage to Priesthood Meeting. We returned home in evening.
Sunday 7: I attended Sunday School and Meeting. There was a fair attendance at both. John went to Logan to School. Ralph took him to the train, cold.
Monday 8: I settled Tithing. Weather mild.
Tuesday 9: I was at home settling Tithing. Cloudy.
Wednesday 10: I worked at my Tithing Accounts and went with Brother Brown, News Agent, to get subscriptions. We get 7. Cloudy, snowed a little.
Thursday 11: Brother Brown went to Garland. Bishop J. H. Hess and wife came to see us. Brother Olsen came at night. Cloudy, snowed a little.
Friday 12: I went to Portage, took Julia, Bell, Josie Kennard, Lewis and Matilda Lillywhite. We attended the returned Missionary Reunion. We took picnic and stopped at Bishop E. Harris’s. Julia and I slept at President Hoskins, Bell at Finley Halls, the others at Bishop Harris’s. Thawing.
Saturday 13: We returned home, attended a Prayer ______ show at night. Rained a little. Snow nearly all gone, lots of mud. Olsen stopped over night.
Sunday 14: I went to Fielding in forenoon to arrange for returned Elders to come and lecture a week later, Lot Smith and F. J. Walker. I attended Meeting, Kate Kennard was sustained as Assistant Secretary of Sunday School and L. H. Kennard and Ella Capener were sustained as Sunday School Teachers. We held a Meeting in the evening. H. P. Olsen addressed the meeting. I lectured on “Respect” for my subject. Rained most of the day.
Monday 15: I was at home preparing my Tithing Accounts. Henry P. Olsen stopped over Sunday with us and went to Garland. Foggy and warm.
Tuesday 16: I was still preparing my Tithing Accounts. Warm and Foggy.
Wednesday 17: I went to Portage, settled Tithing at Stake office. Stopped at night with Brother Gibbs. Foggy all day and night.
Thursday 18: I came home all well. The roads were awful both ways. Sun shinning, some clouds.
Friday 19: I remained home choring around home. Clear and warm, a beautiful spring day, awful muddy under foot.
1900: January, Saturday 20: I remained home all day, not feeling very well. Warm and pleasant overhead, very muddy.
Sunday 21: I went to Meeting. We had a fair turnout. Sister Orwin was released from furnishing the sacrament and a vote of thanks tendered her for her kindness and promptness. Mary E. Smith volunteered to furnish it for a year. I made a verbal report of the tithing and offerings of the Ward also read the Statistical Report. We held Meeting in the evening. Elders Lot Smith and F. J. Walker promised to come and hold a meeting with us, but they failed to come for what reason I don’t know. Cloudy and mild.
Monday 22: I chored around home, went to the R. S. dance at night. H P. Olsen came and went to the Ball, it was a Basket Party and was a success in every respect. The day was a little rainy and foggy.
Tuesday 23: I chored around home, roads very muddy, weather fine.
Wednesday 24: I went to Corrine and 3 Mile. Roads bad, weather warm.
Thursday 25: I returned home. Thomas Williams died on 24. Maggie, Emma and her Aunt came as far as Riverside on their way to Samaria. Weather very pleasant.
Friday 26: Tom Young came and the folks went to Samaria, Maggie Young stayed with us. Weather warm and pleasant.
Saturday 27: I was at home helping Julia prepare for Stake visits. President W. W. Gibbs, Emma Alford, Florence Gibbs of the Stake Primary Presidency and Richard Rowe came and held Meeting in the evening with a fair attendance. Warm and pleasant.
Sunday 28: We attended Sunday School, the visitors all went with. Brother Gibbs addressed the School. Weather fine. We held Ward Conference and all the Officers were sustained. L. H. Kennard was sustained as Ward Clerk and Historian. Mary E. Tingey was sustained as Secretary of the R. Society. These were all of the new Officers that were put in. Elders Charles Udy and Frank Burns were present as Stake Missionaries, but consented to let the Presidency have their time in the afternoon and then wait and hold Mormon Elders Meeting in the evening, which they did and it was very interesting and also profitable. The house was well filled.
Monday 29: I was at home all day, held Teacher’s Meeting in evening. After meeting, the Bishopric visited Osburn Nye and they mutually agreed to separate as husband and wife. They could not be reconciled to live together. Clear, warm and pleasant. Grt [Great?] month.
Tuesday 30: I went to Collinston for coal, got 1800 lbs, got curtain cloth for District School. Maggie, Roxey and Emmie’s folks went home. I attended the Mutual Meeting, delivered the 8th lesson lecture, very pleasant, bees out.
Wednesday 31: Bishop William Hide came. I went to Roweville and business with him. He stopped overnight. Warm and pleasant.
February, Thursday 1: I went to Will Van Fleet’s with the women folks, visited till evening, Bishop Hide returned home, weather pleasant.
Friday 2: I went to Fielding and visited the schools, found them in good condition, John came from Logan, a little cloudy.
Saturday 3: I went to Portage, Brothers B. Lillywhite and L. H. Kennard and my Counselors went with me. We had a good Meeting. 72 testimonies were born. We returned home in the evening, there was a light skiff of snow on the found, in the morning some clouds during day.
1900: February, Sunday 4: We had a good attendance at Meeting. There were 55 souls present in the evening to hear Oliver Halford lecture on Faith. Elder Halford did not put in an appearance, cause unknown. Snowed a little, cloudy most of day, warm.
Monday 5: I went to Logan. Took John over also took a grist to mill. Arrived in Logan about 2 p.m. found all tolerable well. Weather warm, I took team to Bishop William Hides. I went with him to Teacher’s Meeting.
Tuesday 6: I returned home in the evening, a hard northwest wind blew all the latter part of day.
Wednesday 7: I chored around home and attended Relief Society Meeting in the afternoon and Deacon’s Meeting in the evening. Cold raw north wind all day, yet mild for winter weather.
Thursday 8: I went to Fielding, got a load of lucern chaff at J. E. Robinsen’s belonging to J. S. Clark in exchange, blowing and snowing most all day and at night.
Friday 9: I visited the Riverside School in company with T. F. Coombs in the forenoon, pleasant weather, cloudy.
Saturday 10: Chored around home.
Sunday 11: I went to Meeting, we had a fair turnout. South wind, cloudy and disagreeable. We were to have had Elder William Howel of Woodruff to lecture on the Principle of Repentance, a full house, but was disappointed in the speaker. We read a Sermon of President Brigham Young.
Monday 12: I went to Fielding got a load of lucern chaff, cloudy.
Tuesday 13: I went to Gleason’s got a load of straw and went to Fielding and attended School Board meeting. Snow and squally all day.
Wednesday 14: I remained at home all day writing letters and straightening my Ward Books.
Thursday 15: I remained home doing some writing.
Friday 16: I chored around home, cold cloudy, we went to Brigham.
Saturday 17: I was at home all day, boys hauled manure, squally.
Sunday 18: The President and Counselor of the 3rd Quorum of Elders were at our Meeting and addressed us also Elder Lot Smith spoke to us and visited with us and addressed us in the evening. The Elders held a Meeting after the regular Meeting.
Monday 19: I went to Logan on the train, found all well, cloudy.
Tuesday 20: I attended the B. Y. College with John, I visited his classes. Snowed in forenoon, melted by night.
Wednesday 21: I went to the Temple, took endowments for the dead, I had 6 sealings done.
Thursday 22: I went to the Temple, took endowments for the dead. 6 sealings done ____ _____ ____ ____ entertainment in the evening. We had a splendid time. There was snow on the ground at Logan in the morning. Roads muddy here, ground bare, cloudy.
Friday 23: I chored around home helping fix the School House. Cloudy, most of day.
Saturday 24: I remained home all day, cloudy, threatened rain, spring weather, freezing and thawing.
1900: February, Sunday 25: I attended Meetings. My Counselors went to Plymouth to High Priests Meeting, there was none. I attended Acting Teacher’s Meeting and a Meeting at night with a fair attendance at each Meeting. Cloudy all day, sprinkles at night.
Monday 26: I was at home writing and preparing to go to Logan to work in the Temple, cloudy and rained some, very muddy.
Tuesday 27: I went to Logan, took Julia and Bell. We went to do Temple Work. The roads were awful muddy.
Wednesday 28: We went to the Temple, we took endowments for the dead and received our Higher Blessings. Pleasant weather. Joseph Hadfield and wife, Benjamin Lillywhite and wife, L. H. Kennard and wife also received their Blessings.
March, Thursday 1: We all took endowments for the dead, but Brother Leonard and wife, they came home. Phebe went with us.
Friday 2: We went to the Temple and took endowments and returned home in the afternoon, arrived about 3 p.m., cloudy.
Saturday 3: I went to Portage, took Brothers Hadfield and Lillywhite. We stopped at the springs on our way home and baptized John H. Hadfield and Julia Maud Jardine, Brother Hadfield officiating, cloudy, threatening rain.
Sunday 4: I attended Sunday School and Meeting with a good attendance at each and a very good spirit at both. J. H. Hadfield and Julia M. Jardine were confirmed. J. H. Lillywhite’s baby was blessed, cloudy.
Monday 5: I went to Mark Halls, took Elmer and pulled 2 teeth for him, the first ones I ever pulled. I went to Collinston in afternoon got coal, squally all day.
Tuesday 6: I chored around home all day, attended Y. M. M. I. A. in evening, squally all day, cooler.
Wednesday 7: I went to Fielding, got a load of lucern chaff, squally.
Thursday 8: Rained. I went to Fielding in evening to attend School Board Meeting.
Friday 9: I chored around home. Attended the S. S. Ball at night, it was a success in every way. There was a large crown present. Weathers fine, spring day.
Saturday 10: I went to Honeyville Mill. Got the S. S. Library books that had been sent to the Honeyville Coop. They were 4 books short, weather hot, a beautiful spring day.
Sunday 11: I attended Meeting, we had a good turnout and a good time, quite a number of young folks were called amongst others. Ralph and Hyrum for the first time in a general Meeting, also George Nye for the first time. A beautiful spring day.
Monday 12: I greased, harnessed, butchered a cow, weather warm.
Tuesday 13: I went to Garland and Roweville to peddle beef and had fair luck. Brother Mifflin had a show in the School House. Cold wind started up in afternoon, flowed all night.
Wednesday 14: I went to Fielding, sold the balance of my beef.
Weather very pleasant, everything growing.
1900: March, Thursday 15: I chored around home fixing for garden, plowed a piece. We held a Meeting to consider the matter of petitioning for a County road running south through Garland, fine spring weather.
Friday 16: I chored around preparing for R. S. Annual and Stake Conference, beautiful, John and Frank came on their wheels from Logan.
Saturday 17: I went to Collinston to meet the Conference visitors, but they did not come. We went to Garland to the Relief Society Annual, it was very nice and in the evening our folks held theirs and it was a grand success. Olsen came. Apostle Lund came on the midnight train. Stopped with us the rest of the night.
Sunday 18: I took my women folks and Apostle Lund to Portage to Conference. We attended 3 Meetings, stayed with Bishop Enoch Harris at night.
Monday 19: We attended one Meeting and I took the brethren, Apostle Lund and James W. McMurrin to the Train. They went to Salt Lake. Roads dry and dusty, pleasant.
Tuesday 20: I started to plow on M. E. Porter’s dry farm and went to Fielding dry farm in evening, found my grain looking fine. Went to Willard Peart’s and I administered to their girl Rita.
Wednesday 21: I was plowing on M. E. Porter’s dry land.
Thursday 22: I plowed in forenoon, sowed wheat in afternoon. The boys, Ralph and Hyrum plowed and harrowed. I went to Fielding in evening and attended School Board Meeting.
Friday 23: I finished sowing wheat and harrowed it in up to M. E. Porters. Fine spring weather all day, but freezing ice every night.
Saturday 24: Hyrum and I went to the Fielding dry farm. Sowed and harrowed 3 ¾ acres of barley, repaired some fence, returned in evening, cold north wind.
Sunday 25: I attended Meeting, there was a very slim attendance. We held Teacher’s Meeting, rather cool.
Monday 26: I chored around house, arranged for Moses E. Porter’s dry land farm. There was a surprise party on Jesse Lillywhite in the School House. There was a large crowd present. Snowed and rained a little, not enough to wet the top of the ground. Robert Harris of Portage came and got some potatoes.
Tuesday 27: M. E. Porter and I went to Logan. Found all well, Ma was feeling better, snowed on us part of the way.
Wednesday 28: We returned home. Froze hard at night, held council meeting.
Thursday 29: I plowed on the Porter farm. Bishopric held a Council Meeting.
Friday 30: I stopped home to receive Tithing and Fast Offering, warm.
Saturday 31: Hyrum plowed, Ralph and I hauled hay from J. H. Welling’s, dug 27 shade trees for M. E. Anderson, extra warm.
April, Sunday 1: I attended Sunday School and Meeting. I asked the Sunday School to replace my Counselors from the Office of Assistants to Superintendent Hadfield. A Brother Pond was in attendance and addressed us at both Meetings. He spoke well, he also talked at night to the Conjoint Meeting.
Monday 2: I moved M. E. Porter’s shanty down. Started a land to break for Hyrum. Planted a few potatoes for early ones, blowed hard from south, some clouds, rained at night.
1900: April, Tuesday 3: I shaved my horses and got ready to go to Conference, rained some.
Wednesday 4: Julia and I started by team to Conference. James Jardine and wife went with us. We went to Ogden, stopped at 3 Mile for dinner, quite cool, some wind.
Thursday 5: We left Ogden about 3 o’clock for Farmington. Julia’s met her Mother in Ogden and went to the city with her to visit with Petersons. We took them, then to the train. Brother and Sister Jardine stopped at Kaysville, I went on to Farmington, arrived there just before sunset, found all well. I left my team at E. C. Clark’s, cool and some clouds.
Friday 6: I took the dummie for the City and attended 2 Meetings. Julia and I stopped at night with Jacob Peart’s folks . Rained some during the night.
Saturday 7: We attended 2 meetings, stopped at Jacob’s at night. We visited with Charley Peterson’s folks some, rained.
Sunday 8: Snowed all day. We attended 2 Meetings. Wilford, Julia and I went with J. E. Stevenson to Cottonwood to visit Mame, found all well.
Monday 9: We returned to the City. Wilford and I attended the Priesthood Meeting of the General Authorities and returned to Farmington in the evening, stormed most of day.
Tuesday 10: I started for home, met Brother and Sister Jardine at Kaysville and they came with me to Ogden, Julia having returned to Ogden Monday evening.
Wednesday 11: We stopped and visited at Ogden. Mother Peterson came from the City. Julia and I visited D. H. Perry and listened to some fine music. The east wind was blowing.
Thursday 12: We all arrived home a little after dark, we took dinner at Tom Young’s at 3 Mile. East wind in Ogden, rained some.
Friday 13: It rained most of day.
Saturday 14: Ralph and Hyrum plowed. I chored around home, nursing cold and rheumatism.
Sunday 15: I attended Sunday School and Meetings and addressed both and reported the Conference. There was a very light attendance; many of the men folks are away sheep shearing. Cool and some wind and clouds.
Monday 16: The boys plowed upon the hill. I dug post holes, weather pleasant.
Tuesday 17: I located lines on west side of the field. The boys plowed. Cloudy, south wind.
Wednesday 18: I chored around home in forenoon and went to Fielding to attend Tax Meeting. It was decided not to build a School House at Riverside this year, but levy a tax of 5 mills to be set aside for that purpose next year, hazy weather with south wind.
Thursday 19: I did not feel well and chored around home, hard south wind, some clouds.
Friday 20: The boys plowed, south wind.
Saturday 21: I went to Corrine with E. T. Capener, arranged for another lot for Ralph, cloudy.
Sunday 22: Rained all day, there was S. S. and Meeting. I attended Meeting, most all young people.
Monday 23: The boys plowed, cloudy.
1900: April, Tuesday 24: The boys plowed, cloudy.
Wednesday 25: Boys ploughed Ralph’s lot, cloudy.
Thursday 26: Rained most of day.
Friday 27: The boys went to plow, some clouds, rained before night.
Saturday 28: The boys plowed some. I went to Fairview to attend a Farmer’s Meeting. At 4 p.m. it was decided to join the Association already organized at Roweville and make it general for the farmers using Canal water. Rained hard, almost covered the ground.
Sunday 29: I went to Meeting, there was a very small turn out. Cloudy. Rained a little, east wind most of day, but no frost.
Monday 30: The boys plowed up on the Porter farm. I chored around, rained a little, warm and pleasant.
May, Tuesday 1: The boys plowed. I went to Collinston with Tithing eggs. Went to Fielding on the return. Julia went with me, clear and pleasant. I received the following letter which will describe itself.

Dear Friend Myron, I thought as it has been raining for 2 or 3 days, I would fulfill my promise and send you a list of the names of this remarkable S. S. Class for it is remarkable that these 15 boys were all born in Farmington and all are alive at the present time and that they have all made so good a record. I will continue to keep track of them.

1900: May, Tuesday 1: Diary for Dec 11th 1870. Cloudy with cold north wind, ground covered with snow. Went to Sunday School. The teacher of the Book of Mormon class being absent. I was called by Supt. J. T. Smith to take charge of the class. There were present in the class, Myron Richards, Lorin Robinsen, Joseph Clark, John Millard, Andrew Rogers, Walter Grover, Hyrum Ward, Daniel Miller, George Richards, Jed Earl, Eddie Wilcox. Four were absent from the class as follows: Henry Hess, Frank Miller, Wilford Clark, Grant Robinsen. After Sunday School, remained to Ward Meeting. Was called to the stand by Bishop Hess, and bore my testimony, after meeting ate dinner at mothers. Evening was at Thomas Abbotts with J. G. Smith and Vi Gleason to make Bylaws for the Farmington Lyceum…

I’m looking for old relic for our Sunday School Jubilee – I ran across this item, and I assure you I was very much pleased to find it for it reminded me of the good times we used to have 30 years ago. I have just sent a copy of this to the Juvenile Editor. I presume they will print it as soon as they have space. Well for fear I will tire you, I will close for this time.
Praying the Lord to watch over those 15 boys in the future as he has in the past and trusting you and yours are all well, and are enjoying all the blessings of the Gospel, I remain your Brother in the Everlasting Covenant.

Wednesday 9: Finished planting John’s lot to potatoes, extra lot.
Thursday 10: Ralph drilled some lucern on the Porter land. We planted corn on Julia’s and my lot. A little cloudy, I helped Julia clean house.
Friday 11: We planted potatoes on Julia’s lot in the forenoon. Rained in afternoon so we could do nothing outdoors.
Saturday 12: Rained most of forenoon. South wind, hailed a little, stopped us from planting potatoes.
1900: May, Sunday 13: I went to Meeting, a fair attendance and good spirit. Showered most of day, no one went to represent us at Malad City in the Stake Sunday School Conference on account of storm.
Monday 14: I planted cabbage, melons and cucumbers, the boys plowed. Julia went to Ogden.
Tuesday 15: I planted cabbage, melons and cucumbers, and other stuff.
Wednesday 16: I planted squash and sprouted potatoes, cold north wind, froze hard at night, killed most of strawberries.
Thursday 17: We planted Ralph’s lot to potatoes, warm and pleasant after the frost.
Friday 18: I built head gates and chored around the logs, frost in the morning, pleasant all day, cloudy at night threatening rain.
Saturday 19: I went to Corrine with a load of 54 bushels of wheat for the Relief Society. I paid the balance due on their lot of $25.00. Cloudy and stormed part of the time, very hot, part of time.
The wife of Charles Riggs [Gibbs?] died of hart fractier. I was sent for and was there all night.
Sunday 20: [no entry]
Monday 21: I went to Charles Giggs [Gibbs?] and took charge of the arrangements of the corps and hauled it to the train to be sent to Farmington. Weather clear and pleasant.
Tuesday 22: My 42nd Birthday! Ralph and I started with 2 loads of Tithing Potatoes for Portage and Symaria. I disposed of one load at Portage and stopped over night with Bishop Harris.
Wednesday 23: A hard frost in the morning of Wed. Ralph came back with one team and I went on to Symaria, traded my load to Brother Waldron for posts, nails and some cash. I stopped over night with Brother Bowen’s folks, clear, hot sultry part of day, cloudy and sprinkled some.
Thursday 24: I returned home with the posts, dug some post holes, cloudy part of day.
Friday 25: I tried to water, made some ditches, set some posts, hot. John came in evening.
Saturday 26: I watered some, chored around. Phoebe came, stayed a few minutes; Ralph went to Fielding to stay with Marnier Peart. Hot.
Sunday 27: John went to Logan in morning, Elders Ben Waldron and William Morse visited our meeting and addressed us as Stake Missionaries. Teacher’s meeting day, but no teachers present. Hot.

January, Tuesday 1: We held a dance and fishpond for the children in the afternoon, cloudy and windy.
Wednesday 2: John and Ralph returned to the canyon in the evening James H. Welling came and helped me with the Tithing Accounts, cloudy and windy.
Thursday 3: Brother W. H. Gibbs came and assisted me to make my Tithing Report, south wind and cloudy.
Friday 4: We finished the reports and Brother Gibbs went to assist Bishop James H. Hess with his Reports, south wind and cold.
Saturday 5: I went with J. H. Lillywhite and his father, J. H Welling and Joseph Hadfield to Portage to attend the Priesthood Meeting. Started to snow a little then turned to rain, drizzled a little. Hyrum went to Will Grover’s to get some hay.
Sunday 6: I attended Sunday School and Fast Meeting, also Conjoint Meeting in the evening, rained a little all day, some wind from south.
Monday 7: I chored around home. Joseph A. West came to see about selling some hay. Rained hard in forenoon and snowed 2 or 3 inches in the afternoon.
Tuesday 8: I went to Collinston with a hog dressed for Tithing, expressed it to the Bishop’s Storehouse, 172 lbs at 6c a pound, clear, warm.
Wednesday 9: I chored around home, cloudy and cold, some wind, frost fell. We started a “Civil Government” class in evening.
Thursday 10: I was at home all day helping Julia white wash, stormy.
Friday 11: I went to Fielding and Collinston, squally all day.
Saturday 12: I worked repairing Schoolhouse and desks.
Sunday 13: I attended meeting and S. S. Brother Cleveland of Centerville talked to us, he was acquainted with the Prophet Joseph, bore his testimony.
Monday 14: I went with M. E. Porter to Logan and returned, found all well. I took a grist to mill, warm and pleasant.
Tuesday 15: Ralph went back to canyon and I shawed the pony and got Ralph ready, clear slight north wind.
Wednesday 16: I went to Collinston, got coal and things to take to the boys, pleasant, warm, no snow.
Thursday 17: I went to the Saw Mill to take the boys some things. I got there just before dark, warm and dry most of the way.
Friday 18: I went to the timber, helped the boys get their load and one for next day. Came back to camp and returned home in the evening, regular spring weather.
Saturday 19: I went to Bear River City, attended the Farmer’s Protective Association and went on to Corrine and returned home in the evening, spring weather, no snow.
Sunday 20: I attended Meeting, a very small attendance, but had a good meeting, warm thawing all day.
Monday 21: Stormy, I chored around home.
Tuesday 22: I went to Fielding, got my sleigh runner sawed to send to John and Ralph, warm and muddy.
1901: January, Wednesday 23: I visited the school here and at Fielding in the afternoon, C. W. Earl was with me. I attended “Literary Class” in the evening, weather warm, ground bare and muddy.
Thursday 24: I went to Fielding to post notice of Tax Payers Meeting to consider size and kind of Schoolhouse to build at Riverside during the coming summer. Allen Roach came took my water deeds to get settled, cold north wind, cloudy in evening, little snow.
Friday 25: I chored around home. Chris Peterson came from Canyon, brought word from John and Ralph, they were well, warm like spring. I went to Malad Floom to see David McQueen about getting some money. He was to let me know about it in a few days.
Saturday 26: I chored around home. Hyrum and Elmer went and got a load of hay to Will Grover’s, warm and muddy. Olsen came stopped overnight.
Sunday 27: I attended Sunday School and Meeting. We had Elders Charles Udy and Frank Burns as Stake Missionaries. They addressed us also Brother Cleveland talked to us. I attended the Teacher Meeting and a Council Meeting in the evening, warm and pleasant, ground getting dry.
Monday 28: I chored around home.
Tuesday 29: I went to Canal to try and borrow some money, failed. Went to Fielding and Collinston, got some coal $2.20. Squally, cold, Tom Young came.
Wednesday 30: Julia and I went to Logan to get some money. We had to mortgage our home and Julia’s lot to get $205.
Thursday 31: We made the arrangement and came home in the afternoon, weather was colder than it had been for some time, east wind blowed some ground bare.
February, Friday 1: I chored around home, had a severe cold. Tom Young went to Cache with us and returned last night, stoped overnight and went home this morning, clear but cold wind. Aaron Porter got a load of coal for Meeting House $5.10. There was a dance and supper for benefit of our Missionary W. M. Lillywhite. $5.00 cleared.
Saturday 2: We held a School Meeting at Fielding to determine the size and kind of a House to build at Riverside. It was decided to appropriate $2,000.00 to build and equip a Schoolhouse at Riverside. 17 (adults?) held Meeting, cold wind.
Sunday 3: I attended S. S. and Meeting. There was a large attendance and good spirit, snowed 5 inched at night.
Monday 4: I received the mortgage money on our home.
Tuesday 5: I sent several checks out to my creditors. I was at home all day. I visited C. H. Tingey’s sick babe, also Effie Welling and her babe. Brother Tingey’s baby died about 6 o’clock, cloudy.
Wednesday 6: I went to Collinston in the morning and telephoned to Centerville and Ogden, ordered a coffin from Ogden, cold wind.
Thursday 7: Snowed most of day, we held funeral in afternoon. It was the first funeral held in the Riverside Ward.
Friday 8: I chored around home all day, attended Literary Class in evening, cold.
1901: February, Saturday 9: I chored around home all day and attended a Meeting called to elect 3 trustees to hold the Ward property. Bishop M. J. Richards, Joseph H. Welling and Alford Capener were elected, snowed a little.
Sunday 10: I attended Sunday School and Meeting, cold. We held a Meeting of the Taxpayers of Riverside to determine the kind and size of a House to be built at Riverside for Schoolhouse. It was decided to build a 2 room brick, 4 gable House.
Monday 11: I chored around home, went to Fielding and Collinston, got coal, very cold east wind.
Tuesday 12: I chored around home. Ralph went back to the Canyon. Olsen came, stopped overnight. I attended Y. M. M. I. A. in the evening at ___ ____ ___ 8 p.m., warm in day but cold at night.
Wednesday 13: I chored around home, warm in daytime. H. P. Olsen stopped at night, he went to meeting at Garland in evening.
Thursday 14: I went to Fielding, posted tax notice and sent a letter to bank with check in it, cloudy, thawing.
Friday 15: Cloudy all day, thawing, south wind at night.
Saturday 16: I took the women to Fielding to Teacher’s Institute. Professor D. G. Miller from B. Y. College, Logan, talked on language. Cloudy, thawing. I went and administered to J. H. Welling’s baby who had some cold, snowed during the night some. Dr. Karl G. Maser died.
Sunday 17: I attended Sunday School and Meeting, a light attendance at both, snowing most all day and melting some, cleared off and froze hard, about 4 inches of snow.
Monday 18: I went to Three Mile, Bell went with me. I attended the County Court, asked for an appropriation for our roads, they granted $100.00, weather moderated some.
Tuesday 19: I went from 3 Mile to Brigham. Went to see an Architect Funk about drafting plans for a Schoolhouse at Riverside also visited Superintendent Nephi Anderson to see about School District Record, could find nothing except the organization, snowed and rained most all day. We visited at Tom Young’s in evening.
Wednesday 20: We returned home, snow nearly all gone, roads very muddy on top, thawing very fast, sprinkled a little.
Thursday 21: I remained home all day. In the evening I went to Fielding to meet with the Trustees, awful muddy, snow going fast, considerable frost in the ground, cloudy and mild.
Friday 22: Thawing hard all day, awful muddy. John and Ralph came home. Y. Ladies had a dance and ice cream. Julia and Sister Hadfield made the ice cream. Dance was a success, awful muddy, rained at night some.
Saturday 23: Rained most of day, I went with Alfred A. Capener to Manilla to attend a meeting of the Advisory Board of the Farmer’s Protective Association.
Sunday 24: I attend Meeting, there was a good attendance, notwithstanding the awful muddy roads, cloudy and mild, frost nearly all out of ground.
Monday 25: I remained home all day preparing School District Records for John to write, he was at work recording 7 hours.
Tuesday 26: John and Ralph went back to the Canyon. I went to Fielding to meet with the School Board and Andrew Funk to arrange with Mr. Funk to make plans and specifications for a Schoolhouse to be built during the coming summer. Hyrum worked on the road with teem, cloudy, rained some.
1901: February, Wednesday 27: I chored around home toping shad trees, warm and thawing frost nearly all out, Hyrum worked on road.

March, Friday 1: I chored around home, cloudy, cold, roads drying. John and Ralph came home.
Saturday 2: I went with J. H. Welling to Portage to Priesthood Meeting.
Sunday 3: I went to S. S. and Fast Meeting, south wind and cloudy.
Monday 4: I went to Ogden to get a new wagon, cold north wind.
Tuesday 5: I remained in Ogden dickering for a wagon, stopped with C. C. Richards at night, pleasant weather.
Wednesday 6: I came back to 3 Mile, stopped at Young’s at night.
Thursday 7: I came home, found all well, cloudy.
Friday 8: I remained around home, snowy and squally all day. I toped some shade trees, Y. Men’s dance at night.
Saturday 9: I went to Fielding and attended a special tax meeting. It was decided to assess 8 mills for building and current expenses, cloudy, colder.
Sunday 10: I went to E. T. Capener’s in the morning, they had had a premature birth. The child lived nearly a day. I attended Meeting, Levi Stevenson was present and talked good. I attended Bishop’s Council Meeting and a choir practice in the evening, cloudy, colder.
Monday 11: Capener’s baby died during the night. We assisted them to get ready to take it to Farmington to burry it. J. H. Welling and I went to look out a burying ground, snowed in evening, ground covered.
Tuesday 12: I chored around home, ground muddy, Ralph went to Logan.
Wednesday 13: I chored around home, warm, chopping wood.
Thursday 14: Ground getting dry, chopped some wood, planted shade trees on Ralph’s lot. Ralph came home, Hyrum went to ___________.
Friday 15: Chopping wood, boys went to Will Grover’s for hay.
Saturday 16: We hauled manure. I went to Fielding to School Board Meeting at night, weather pleasant.
Sunday 17: I attended Meeting, there was a fair attendance, weather fine.
Monday 18: John, Ralph and I hauled manure in forenoon, Hyrum started to work for Jesse Orwin. We attended the R. S. Annual Meeting in the afternoon and a dance and supper at night, all went off well, weather a little blustery, but no storm. Jas. A. West came and sold part of their hay to Pitt and returned home.
Tuesday 19: John and I hauled manure. Olsen came, stopped at night, cold and blustery.
Wednesday 20: We hauled manure, cold and windy.
Thursday 21: We tried to plow, but it would not ______, cold.
Friday 22: John and Julia went to Collinston got coal and plow point.
Saturday 23: We plowed all day on the Ted Capener farm, cold.
1901: March, Sunday 24: Julia, Bell, Len Kennard and I went to Portage and attended 2 Meetings and one in the evening. We stopped with E. Harris, cold north wind, freezing hard nights.
Monday 25: We attended one long Meeting and returned home at night. Apostle John H. Smith was the visitor. I was called to address the Meeting.
Tuesday 26: I and John plowed on the Capener farm, cold, snowing.
Wednesday 27: John and I plowed on the Capener farm, cold, snowing.
Thursday 28: John and I plowed on the Capener farm, cold, snowing.
The trustees of the School District came and we held a Board Meeting, accepted plans
and specifications of Mr. A. Funk.
Friday 29: I went with Alfred A. Capener and T. F. Coombs as a
Committee appointed by the Farmer’s Protection Association to inspect the Canal. We
found it nearly ready to receive the water for the season in good condition, cold, squally.
Saturday 30: I went to Manilla to attend Advisory Board Meeting of F.
P. A., cold, snowed. The West Side Dramatic Association played for the first time.
Sunday 31: I attended Fast Meeting, the Fast Meeting having been
appointed by President Snow for that day. I also attended Conjoint Meeting in the
evening, cold, squally, freezing nights.
April, Monday 1: We chored around home. John went to Garland to the
Theatre.
Tuesday 2: John and I went to Bishop Hess’s saw mill northwest of
Portage, sprinkled some.
Wednesday 3: It snowed all day, we could do nothing, remained in
camp.
Thursday 4: We got some lumber sawed and came home in evening about 10:30 p.m., cold, some snow on ground, Julia and Bell went to S. L. City.
Friday 5: I went to Salt Lake City on the evening train, cloudy and cold, stopped at Jacob Peart’s.
Saturday 6: I attended 2 Meetings, snowed hard in evening, Julia and I stopped over night at Mary Gray’s.
Sunday 7: We attended 2 Meetings and Sunday School Union in evening and went to Jacob Peart’s top stop overnight.
Monday 8: I attended Priesthood Meeting in forenoon and Julia and I went to Ogden in evening. Stopped at Dave Tribe’s over night, weather cold, some wind.
Tuesday 9: We visited with Charley Richard’s folks. I attended Court and stopped over night with them, weather raw.
Wednesday 10: I came home, Bell came, Julia stopped in Ogden, found all well, weather cold.
Thursday 11: I chored around home, Ralph started to harrow, cool cloudy, tree man came, James Jensen, trees came.
Friday 12: John and I planted trees, warm like spring, President C_____ died.
Saturday 13: John, Ralph and I planted trees on Ralph’s lot, Julia came from Ogden, spring weather.
Sunday 14: I attended Meeting. John went to Brigham to go sheering. Joseph Hadfield resigned as Sunday School Superintendent, cold and windy.
1901: April, Monday 15: Ralph and I planted garden, a little warmer, but freezing at night.
Tuesday 16: We chored around making watering trough and hauling manure, freeze nights, north wind.

Thursday 18: Ralph and I started to plant shade trees around the Tithing Lot, warmer in day, but freezing at night.
Friday 19: We planted trees and set posts on Tithing Lot. Brick maker came to examine the soil - Fred Douglas. George Austin came in evening to buy land. I rode around with him. He stopped with us at night.
Saturday 20: Austin secured ____ ____ some land from Len Kennard and he went to Collinston. He arranged with me to see some men about buying their land. Ralph and I finished planting and securing the tithing trees. Stanley Dallin got some hay of C. C. Richards.
Sunday 21: I attended Sunday School and Meeting, warm and pleasant, froze _____ at night.
Monday 22: We chored around and prepared to go to the Canyon for log, warm.
Tuesday 23: Ralph and I went to Bishop Hess’s Sawmill, hauled in one load of logs after we got there, warm and pleasant.
Wednesday 24: We got in to the Mill 9 logs, warm growing weather, stormed at night.
Thursday 25: Cloudy and a little snow, we hauled 8 logs to the Mill, cold north wind.
Friday 26: We made two trips to the logs, loaded up and at 25 minutes to 7 p.m. started home, arrived about one a.m. in the night, found George Austin and wife and son and wife and James Gardner stopping overnight with us, warm day.
Saturday 27: Brother Austin took my team and went to Collinston and met President Joseph F. Smith, Bishop T. R. Cutler, General Manager of the ____ country having in view the starting of a beet seed farm. In the afternoon I took my teem and hauled a load of them down to Roweville and over to Deweyville where President Smith, Brothers Gardner and Andrew Austin and wives and Mother took train for Salt Lake City. I returned home, weather pleasant, George Austin and Bishop Cutler went to Corrine.
Sunday 28: I attended Meeting also Teacher’s Meeting. George Austin came to stay overnight with me, Cutler’s went home, weather pleasant.
Monday 29: I went with Brother Austin to see if he could buy land south of here in Garland and Manilla, wanted some of Gleasen’s but he would not sell. We returned home. Austin stopped with us. We gave a farewell social to Brother Hadfield and family, warm and pleasant.
Tuesday 30: I took Brother Austin to Washakie to see if he could buy some land in Manilla belonging to the Indians but he failed _______. I took Brother Austin to Collinston, he was met by Jesse Orwin who gave him an option on his 104 acre farm north of town for 20 days at $45.00 per acre, ½ in 20 days, ½ the first of October. The crop to be divided between them. Austin took train at 3:20 p.m. for home. I brought some coal home, warm and fine growing weather.
May, Wednesday 1: Ralph and I watered trees and chored around home.
Thursday 2: I went to Corrine with L. H. Kennard Jr. to see about getting control of the Park ground for the Public, failed to see Hammond or Forsyth as they were both out of town. Started to rain about noon, continued all the afternoon and into the night. We had a yearling calf die and the Jersey heifer came in.
Friday 3: Rained all day, could do nothing.
Saturday 4: Rained part of day, we worked making head gates and John came in the night.
Sunday 5: I went to S.S. and Meeting. I addressed both. Consent was given to ordain George Nye, Ralph and Hyrum to the Office of Priest. Ralph was sick The day was beautiful, all nature smiled.
Monday 6: I chored around planting, weather warm and fine. The bids for a Schoolhouse were opened and all rejected.
Tuesday 7: I planted sugar beets for a test, ideal, shining.
Wednesday 8: John went north to shear sheep, George Austin called, we planted some potatoes, fine growing weather.
Thursday 9: We planted potatoes on John’s and Ralph’s lots. I attended a meeting to elect a Water Master for the Town. L. H. Kennard was elected. I went to Fielding to see Bishop Hess and Lemuel Rogers folks who were sick. George Austin called here, fine weather, everything growing nicely.
Friday 10: We worked plowing and planting lots, warm and fine.
Saturday 11: We finished planting potatoes, fine weather.
Sunday 12: I went to Sunday School and Meeting. John Strong was present and addressed the School and Meeting, splendid growing weather.
Monday 13: I went to Collinston to see about selling Tithing grain.
Tuesday 14: Ralph and I started to haul the Tithing grain.
Wednesday 15: We were hauling grain.
Thursday 16: We were hauling grain.
Friday 17: We made 2 trips to Collinston with Tithing grain.
Saturday 18: We finished hauling the grain. Sunday School Conference at Portage, hot.
Sunday 19: We held Sunday School and Meeting but with very light attendance.
Monday 20: We planted the Relief Society Lot to potatoes and started to water the lots. Ralph plowed for Alf Capener. At night we spent the evening at Kennard’s, Len’s marriage reception.
Tuesday 21: Watered lots and hoed in gardens, cloudy, sprinkled.
Wednesday 22: I am 43 years old today. Julia and Bell prepared a chicken dinner and all the family were present except John. Mosiah Evens and wife came and took dinner with us. J. H. Welling and family were here also, cloudy and pleasant all day. In the evening the Relief Society gave a surprise to the Bishopric and male members of Ward (in the School House) and presented the Ward with a nice 10 x 18 foot flag. After a nice program was carried out, free ice cream and cake was served. Company broke up about 12 o’clock.
Thursday 23: I chored around home watering some. Ralph plowed for Alf Capener.
1901: May, Friday 24: I went and built fence on M. E. Porter’s land to protect our grain. East wind blowing was awful at night, striped trees, blowed out house down, demolished the coal shed at Meetinghouse, cloudy. Roy Young and Sister Rim? of Samaria came.
Saturday 25: I chored around house, repairing fence etc, rained a little. Roy Young came back from Samaria and Bell went to 3 Mile with him, east wind still blowing but not so hard, some clouds. Ralph plowed ½ day for Alf Capener.
Sunday 26: I attended S. S. and Meeting, very light attendance and Teacher’s Meeting, weather moderate, blowed and rained in the evening, hard wind.
Monday 27: I watered Tithing Lot, Julia started to clean house, rained in afternoon.
Tuesday 28: Ralph started to cut hay for M. E. Porter. Hyrum and I started to water the Capener land we had rented, Austin came, thinned one row of beets, weather hot.
Wednesday 29: We were still watering and mowing. I hurt my foot and could do nothing the rest of the day. The final bid was received on the building of the Riverside School House and the House let to D. S. McQueen for $1850.00, the House to be completed by Sep. 1, 1901. Thinned some beats. John Bowcutt’s family moved into town during the week.
Thursday 30: I thinned the balance of my beets, boys working at the hay, cloudy, weather cool.
Friday 31: I chored around home, weeding etc, moderate weather.
June, Saturday 1: Julia and I went to Portage. I attended Priesthood Meeting, took dinner with President Hoskins. We returned home in the evening, pleasant weather.
Sunday 2: I attended Fast Meeting, only a few present, but a good spirit present. We attended Conjoint Meeting in evening, a good attendance and a good Meeting. Maggie and Elmer went to Perry (3 Mile), rained some, cool.
Monday 3: Ralph, Hyrum and I worked plowing town ditches and putting in culverts. Bell and children came home. I went to F. P. A. Advisory Board Meeting.
Tuesday 4: We started to irrigate the Capener land. The boys finished hauling M. E. Porter’s hay. Cold north wind, froze hard last night.
Wednesday 5: The boys are watering. I chored around home.
Thursday 6: I chored around home. Alvira Harrison and Jane Evens came in the interest of Young Ladies Association. They were informed that they had sickness at home and went on that same evening with [out?] holding meeting. Mr. Lackland called to see me about Music Teaching.
Friday 7: I chored around home, weather fine, a little cool.
Saturday 8: I went to Logan and Phebe went with me, found Mother well, cloudy at night.
Sunday 9: I stopped over in Logan, attended two Meetings.
Monday 10: I came home. Ralph started cutting hay on the old dry land farm, rained a little in morning.
Tuesday 11: Hyrum went to dry farm to help Ralph make hay. I watered on the Capener land, cool weather, some frost at night.
1901: June, Wednesday 12: I irrigated all day, rained some. The officers of the Stake Primary were here and held meeting.
Thursday 13: I watered the lot, clear, cool nights.
Friday 14: I watered John’s and Ralph’s lots, clear, cool.
Saturday 15: I chored around home fixing gates and fence.
Sunday 16: I went to Sunday School and Meeting. There was a fair attendance at both. The Trustees came and arranged with me to go to Brigham to meet the Commissioners and protest against changing the north line of our School District. Plymouth wants it ½ mile further south.
Monday 17: I went to Brigham, attended County Court, went on to Perry (3 Mile). Stopped overnight, Bell and children went with me, weather hot.
Tuesday 18: I returned home. Bell stayed to put up fruit. I watered grain in the afternoon, hot.
Wednesday 19: I still irrigating. Ralph and Hyrum finished hauling the hay on the Fielding dry farm and returned home, hot. Bishop T. R. Cutler, George Austin, Mrs. Evens, Mr. Cattell and others called here.
Thursday 20: I watered the lot. I watered the west two rows of beets. Agness B. Williams called. Hyrum, Maggie and Elmer all went to Perry for their Ma. Austin Wheelon and Clerk Pierson called to see me. I contracted to plow and clear sage off of 80 acres of land @ $4.50, hot, some clouds.
Friday 21: I chored around home, very hot.
Saturday 22: I went to Corrine with a load of Tithing wheat and barley. Bell and children got home from Perry, very hot.
Sunday 23: I attended Sunday School and Meeting. There was a fair attendance at both although it was Stake Conference time. No one went from Riverside that I heard of, hot and windy.
Monday 24: I started to haul hay on shairs for Orwin, Alferd Gibbs helping Ralph and Hyrum. I watered lots, John came home, hot in forenoon, cold wind in evening.
Tuesday 25: I watered the Capener land, very hot, frost at night.
Wednesday 26: I was still watering the Capener land.
Thursday 27: I watered the lot and the sugar beets. Mr. Peet and a large company of Illanois people called here to look at the place and make some inquiries. J. D. Adams representing the Pioneer Nursery called and stopped over night, hot in daytime, but cool at night.
Friday 28: I chored around home, hot and dry, some wind. J. D. Adams, a tree vendor was here.
Saturday 29: I chored around home, hot and dry wind at night. George Austin, Wheelon and another gentleman, the foreman of all the Utah Sugar Company building.
Sunday 30: I attended Meeting. Benjamin Waldron and Elder Williams of Samaria were here as Missionaries. I attended Teacher’s Meeting also. The Bishop held a special Meeting at our House and ordained my boys and George C. Nye Priests.
July, Monday 1: I chored around home cultivating beets in forenoon and in afternoon I went to Fielding dry farm.
Tuesday 2: I irrigated on the Capener farm, hot, went to Collinston.
1901: July, Wednesday 3: I irrigated on the Capener farm in forenoon and helped raise the Flag Pole in afternoon. John went to Brigham.
Thursday 4: I watered lots all day and went to Fielding with the women in the evening, took supper at Bishop Hess’s, hot. We had the first mess of new potatoes and peas.
Friday 5: I chored around home cutting lawn? Etc.
Saturday 6: I went to Portage to Priesthood Meeting. Bell went with me, very hot and dry.
Sunday 7: I attended Fast Meeting, there was a slim attendance, very warm.
Monday 8: I went to Logan, Julia and Maggie went with me. I attended the Temple Meeting in the afternoon, very hot.
Tuesday 9: We returned home. Phoebe came with us, found John sick, brought the plow attachment with us, started to irrigate, not quite so hot.
Wednesday 10: We went and tried to plow in the sage brush with 3 horses. We plowed about an acre, hot and windy, John sick.
Thursday 11: I irrigated the R. S. Lot and the beet patch, hot and hard wind.
Friday 12: I spent the day taking School Sensus over the dry farms at Fielding, hot and hard winds, Ralph watered his lot.
Saturday 13: I finished taking School Sensus, hot and windy.
Sunday 14: I attended meeting, Matilda O. Lillywhite served as Ward organist, hot.
Monday 15: I went and bought 10 acres of land of Stanley G. Dallin.
Tuesday 16: I watered the Capener farm, hot.
Wednesday 17: Julia and John went to Ogden to see Dr Rich about John, he had 2 teeth pulled. I went to Corrine. Got R. S. deed and arranged for water for the 10 acres I had bought of Stanley G. Dallin, very hot. Sister Roskelley and son came, stopped over night.
Thursday 18: I watered R. S. Lot and 2 rows of beets. J. H. Welling finished cutting the grain on the Porter dry farm, awful hot.
Friday 19: I chored around home and went to Fielding to attend School Board Meeting, hot.
Saturday 20: I chored around home helping Julia get ready for the Presidency. They came in the afternoon, held Meeting with the officers and clerks of the various organizations. President Oliver C. Hoskins and wife, Bishop Moroni Ward and wife were the visitors.
Sunday 21: We attended Sunday School. L. H. Kennard Jr. was voted for and sustained as Superintendent of the School to fill the vacancy caused by the moving away of Joseph Hadfield. We attended Meeting. Alfred A. Capener was sustained as my Second Counselor in place of Joseph H. Lillywhite, moved away. Ella S. Capener was sustained as Second Counselor in the Relief Society. President Hoskins, Bishop Ward and Jarvis Mansfield were the speakers. After Meeting the President had Brother Capener and Sister Capener come to our house and they were ordained and set apart to the positions. I was mouth in ordaining Alfred A. Capener a High Priest, Bishop Ward set him apart as my Second Counselor. President Hoskins set Sister Ella S. Capener apart as Julia’s Second Counselor in the R. S. President Hoskins and party returned home in the evening, very hot, uncomfortably so.
1901: July, Monday 22: I watered the lots, cloudy, sultry, sprinkled a little, awful sultry at night.
Tuesday 23: I watered lots till noon, awful sultry at noon.
Wednesday 24: We celebrated the day in royal stile, a fine program, dancing and refreshments, ball playing etc.
Thursday 25: I watered the lots in forenoon and went to Logan in evening to work in the Temple, cloudy, rained a little in Logan.
Friday 26: I went to the Temple, took endowments and Ma and I were sealed for 8 couples. We returned home in the evening. Ma came with me, also a Sister Austin from Bear Lake, she came to see her sister, Heady Gleason.
Saturday 27: I chored around home, very hot.
Sunday 28: I attended Meeting, we had Elders William Morse and a Brother Davis as Missionaries who talked well. We drove over to the old dry farm, Ma went with us.
Monday 29: I went to the dry farm, very hot.
Tuesday 30: I chored around home. Brother Roskelley called and took dinner with us, David McQueen took dinner with us. Mosiah Evens and daughter called, very hot.
Wednesday 31: I assisted to stake off the ground for the new Schoolhouse and chored around, sultry and hot.
August, Thursday 1: The boys and I plowed and pulled sagebrush, rained a little.
Friday 2: We plowed in forenoon, shocked oats in afternoon, I watered Ralph’s lot.
Saturday 3: Ralph, Len Kennard and I went to Portage. We attended Priesthood Meeting, went to Greer’s and got lumber. Ralph and I had 1912 feet on our 2 loads. Len had 996 feet. We arrived home at one o’clock in morning.
Sunday 4: I attended Meeting. There was a fair attendance of women, 5 men were all that were present, very hot.
Monday 5: I chored around watering lots, very hot. Began laying the foundation of the School House.
Tuesday 6: John, Ralph, Hyrum and I went and plowed and pulled sagebrush for the Sugar Company, very hot.
Wednesday 7: We all pulled brush and plowed, hot.
Thursday 8: John, Ralph and Hyrum went to Saltair. I took them to the train. Mother went to Salt Lake City. I watered lots, very warm.
Friday 9: I chored around fixing stable, very hot.
Saturday 10: We started to thresh. Sister Harrison came held Meeting.
Sunday 11: I attended Sunday School and Meeting, held special Teacher’s Meeting in the evening.
Monday 12: We still had the threshers, very hot.
Tuesday 13: We threshed the Capener’s oats, very hot.
Wednesday 14: We went to Collinston for a load of material for the Schoolhouse, watered lots, hot.
1901: August, Thursday 15: The boys helped Lewis Lillywhite thresh in morning, plowed brush in the afternoon, rained a little.
Friday 16: We plowed sagebrush land, rained hard in afternoon.
Saturday 17: We hauled the Capener oats to Collinston and hauled some material back for Schoolhouse.
Sunday 18: I attended Meeting. Elder Levi John and Oliver Halford were present as Missionaries, they talked well, pleasant and rained at night.
Monday 19: Rained hard most of day. We went to Garland, returned, returned sacks to T. F. King and arranged with John Larsen to help us rail the sagebrush.
Tuesday 20: We started to rail the brush and pull brush.
Wednesday 21: I helped on the Schoolhouse, the boys working at the brush. Austin and Evens and son came to sup overnight with us, threatened storm, sprinkled a little.
Thursday 22: I worked on Schoolhouse. Ralph helped finish the railing. John and Hyrum helped J. H. Welling thresh in forenoon, very hot.
Friday 23: John and Ralph helped Lewis Lillywhite haul grain. Hyrum helped J. H. Welling thresh part of day. I chored around home in forenoon and pulled sage in afternoon. The boys helped Milton Welling thresh.
Saturday 24: We went and pulled brush in forenoon, teem went to Collinston to meet Sarah Tribe. Bell went to Portage for plums, weather cooler.
Sunday 25: I attended Meeting, Elders T. Hewet and David Thomas of Malad were present as Missionaries. They talked well. We held Teachers Meeting, hot.
Monday 26: We all went and plowed and pulled sage, hot. Mr. Pierson and Mr. Gillett came, met with an accident. I was of with ______ to meet Trustees, but they did not come.
Tuesday 27: We worked at the brush plowing, hot.
Wednesday 28: We all plowed and pulled sage in afternoon. I met the Trustees in forenoon.
Thursday 29: We all worked at the brush and plow, some cooler.
August, Friday 30: We worked of the bush, burning in forenoon, ___ ____ hauled grain for Orwin, hot.
Saturday 31: John went to Fielding, got load of wheat from dry farm. The rest of us worked at the plowing and brush pulling.
September, Sunday 1: Fast Day, I attended Meeting, there were a very small turnout, hot.
Monday 2: We all went to plow but Hyrum, he was lame.
Tuesday 3: Ralph cut wheat on the land we bought off S. G. Dallin. John went in afternoon to work for Robert Compton. I helped him some. I got wagon box full of grain from the field where Ralph was cutting. Rained hard and stopped the machine, Enis and a Mr. Austin called for dinner.
Wednesday 4: We chored around in forenoon and plowed in afternoon.
Hyrum and I plowed in forenoon, broke mow board. John and Ralph helped R. Crompton thresh in forenoon, pulled sage in afternoon.
Friday 6: Ralph, Hyrum, Elmer and I worked at the plowing in forenoon. John tended mason on Schoolhouse all day. We broke mow board in afternoon. Hyrum, Elmer and I hauled loose grain in header box. Hard south wind all day, changed to north at night, cold, nearly frost. President McKinley was shot by an assassin.
1901: September, Saturday 7: John and Ralph tended mason, the rest of us hauled a load of grain from Crompton’s and got a load of hay from Tithing stash in forenoon. George Stewart of Malad came. I took Sarah Tribe to Collinston, she went home.
Sunday 8: There was no Sunday School. I attended Meeting, a very light attendance, cool and pleasant, President McKinley reported dead.
Monday 9: We plowed and pulled brush. I worked at it, weather cooler.
Tuesday 10: I worked on Schoolhouse, the boys pulled brush.
Wednesday 11: I worked on Schoolhouse most of the day. Hyrum pulled brush 2 hours, John went to Logan to Mill. Julia, Ralph and Bell went to Brigham for fruit. Bell went to 3 Mile to stay. Both teams came home at night, cloudy, mild.
Thursday 12: We all chored around home in forenoon. Julia and I went to Wheeler’s and to Y. L. M. I. A. Annual in afternoon.
Friday 13: I went to Collinston for coal. The boys, John and Hyrum and Elmer, pulled and burnt brush in forenoon. I went and we plowed and pulled in afternoon. Ralph worked on Schoolhouse.
Saturday 14: We all went and worked at the brush, frost in morning. President McKinley died at 2:15 a.m.
Sunday 15: I went and administered to Myrtle Capener, who was being confined. The child was taken with instruments, all seemed to get along tolerably well. A nice baby boy was born. I attended Meeting, there was a small attendance. Miles and David Hall of Portage were in attendance as Missionaries from the High Council. They gave us some good talk, consent was given to ordain Frederic J. Limb [or Lamb] an Elder.
Monday 16: We all worked at the brush pulling, fine weather.
Tuesday 17: We all worked at the sagebrush pulling.
Wednesday 18: We were all working at the brush clearing and plowing.
Thursday 19: The boys plowed and pulled brush. I worked on Schoolhouse, fine weather.
Friday 20: We all worked at the brush pulling, hard south wind.
Saturday 21: We all worked at the brush pulling, hard sough wind, turned to north, cloudy, threatening storms.
Sunday 22: Julia and I went with J. H Welling and wife to Portage. We attended 2 Conference Meetings and returned home in evening. There were no visitors at our Conference.
Monday 23: The boys and I all went and worked plowing and clearing brush. Broke the plow handles and some bolts and rounds, hard wind from the south, cloudy, turned to north in evening, warm enough to rain.
Tuesday 24: Rained part of day, did not go to plow.
Wednesday 25: We all went to work at the brush. Lem and George Bowcutt helped us chop brush, clear and pleasant.
Thursday 26: Warren [?] Allen and his wife Fannie came the night before. I did not go to work. I visited with them. John was sick and did not go to work. Pleasant weather, warmer and I rode down to Roweville to look at the country.
1901: September, Friday 27: I visited with the folks. John was still sick. Ralph, Hyrum and Elmer worked at the brush. They broke the plow, pleasant weather.
Saturday 28: We all went and worked at the brush, cool and pleasant.
Sunday 29: I attended Sunday School and Fast Meeting also Teacher’s Meeting, weather getting cool, but pleasant.
Monday 30: We worked at the brush and plowing, weather fine.
October, Tuesday 1: We worked at the brushing and plowing, weather fine.
Wednesday 2: We worked at the brushing and plowing, weather fine.
Thursday 3: We worked at the brushing and plowing in the forenoon and part of afternoon, rained hard in afternoon and night.
Friday 4: I went to Salt Lake City. Went home with Jacob Peart.
Saturday 5: I went to the State Fair in forenoon and to Meeting in afternoon and to Mamie’s in the evening, stopped till noon the next day.
Sunday 6: I attended the afternoon session of Conference. There was a very large crow there. President Snow came out and addressed the Meeting, rained hard. I attended S. S. Union in evening and went to stop at night at Jacob Peart’s.
Monday 7: I attended the Priesthood Meeting in forenoon and met the rest of Mother’s family and had a family group[picture] taken at Johnsen’s and we all went to spend the night with Mamie, weather dull.
Tuesday 8: We came back to the City. Saw the proof of the picture. I did some traiding and stoped overnight with Gray’s folks.
Wednesday 9: I came as far as Brigham City and attended First District Court as juror, was put on the first panel and remained there 8 days 2 sessions each day.
Thursday 10: The evening of the 3 day, the jury retired and rendered a verdict of no cause of action in the case of W. M. Miller versus James Allen and came home in the night on the midnight train of the. President Snow died at Salt Lake City.
Friday 11: Came home, Dr. D. M. Wilcox called to see me.
Saturday 12: I chored around home. Went to Garland to see Dr. Wilcox, pleasant weather.
Sunday 13: I went to Sunday School and Meeting and to Brigham at 4 p.m. thinking to be at President Snow’s funeral but was too late, went to 3 Mile, stoped over night.
Monday 14: I attended the District Court as juror, was on all day case of B. F. Tolman vs. Oregon Short Line R. R. verdict for plaintiff.
Tuesday 15: I was on jury all day, weather pleasant and warm.
Wednesday 16: I came home having been discharged for the term.
Thursday 17: I chored around home. John went to Logan with grist for Alf Capener. Hyrum went to 3 Mile to stay for the winter. Ralph at work for Mark Hall, weather fine. [Joseph F. Smith was ordained the sixth president of the Church. dlr]
Friday 18: I chored around home. Went to see Dallin about the land deal, partly arranged for another piece of land, clear and warm.
Saturday 19: I chored around home.
Sunday 20: I attended Sunday School and Meeting.
Monday 21: I chored around home, went and started School, went to Collinston and Fielding. Julia went with me. We went to Micah Garn’s to a Piano? Recital.
1901: October, Tuesday 22: I took a load of Tithing barley to Collinston, fine weather. I chored around home in forenoon, started to dig my beets.
Wednesday 23: I finished digging beets, took them to Collinston.
Thursday 24: I chored around home, cloudy, felt like storm.
Friday 25: I worked at coal shed for Schoolhouse in forenoon, went to Collinston in afternoon for lumber. There was a farewell dance at night for J. H Welling, a very large crowd was present, warm and pleasant.
Saturday 26: I worked on coal house, cloudy, rained some.
Sunday 27: I attended Sunday School and Meeting, there was a very light attendance at both. Elders Albert Grover and David Wood of Farmington were present and addressed us. They talked well, J. H. Welling gave us his fairwell address. We had a good Meeting, rained most of day, rained hard at night.
Monday 28: Rained hard all day, could not work.
Tuesday 29: Julia and I started to Lehi and Cedar Fort for a visit, very cloudy, but did not rain, roads muddy. We went 3 Mile, stoped over night.
Wednesday 30: We started out this morning, Maggie Young went with us. We stoped in Ogden a few hours and then went to Farmington arriving about 9:30 o’clock p.m.
Thursday 31: We went to Salt Lake City. Stoped at Mary Gray’s over night. Weather pleasant and good roads.
November, Friday 1: Julia and I went to the Salt Lake Temple. I took endowments for William Dewey. We enjoyed the day very much, weather good. We went to Cottonwood to Mamie’s to stay at night. Mary Gray went with us to Lehi.
Saturday 2: We started for Lehi, arrived there about 2 p.m., fed the team a while, then Julia and I went on to Cedar Fort arriving there just as it was getting dark, cold north wind.
Sunday 3: We attended Sunday School and Meeting. I was called to address the Meeting, it was Fast Day.
Monday 4: Steve Hales and wife went with us to Lehi. We visited the Sugar Factory in the afternoon and stoped at George Austin’s at night. We went with them to a Republican Ralley in the evening.
Tuesday 5: We went and took dinner with Bishop Thomas R. Cutler and wife in the afternoon we drove over to American Fork to see Julia’s niece and back to Mosiah Evens for supper after which we went to an Election Dance at night and stoped at night with Brother Austin. He was elected Mayor.
Wednesday 6: I went to the Factory with Brother Austin in the morning and then he took me to see their Seritoga Springs and farm and the hands at work in the beets. Weather fine, roads good.
Thursday 7: We visited with Steve and Maney and folks also were invited to a Wedding supper. Pleasant weather, a little cloudy.
Friday 8: We took leave of the folks and started homeward. We went to Lehi, took dinner at Ellick Hales’s. Sister Mary Gray, Julia and I started from there in the afternoon for Mamie’s home at Cottenwood, arriving there about sunset, south wind.
Saturday 9: We spent visiting at Mamie’s and went to Murry and viewed the smelters, hard wind, cloudy.
1901: November, Sunday 10: We started for the City to attend the Special General Conference. We went to the morning Meeting and after Meeting I went to Aunt Mary’s to tend teems when I found a telephone message wanting me at the phone. I went as soon as I could and found Ralph, who told me that Isabell was very sick and wanted me to come as soon as possible. There was no train till 10:50 p.m. which I took home. Maggie Young came with me. We arrived at 3:30 a.m. and found that the Dr. Friday had been and took the baby about 4 p.m. and that Bell and baby were both dead. The baby was dead at birth and Bell died about 7 p.m. Rained hard in Salt Lake in the afternoon and evening, rained a little here.
[At the time of Bell’s death, the ages of Myron John’s children were as follows: John 19, Ralph and Hyrum 15, Maggie 13, Elmer 10, Florence 5, and
Glen 1.]
Monday 11: I went to Collinston and telephoned to Julia and for a casket also to Phebe and Mother and the folks at 3 Mile. I also arranged to have teems meet the trains. Ma and Phebe came, Hyrum and Agness Williams came at night as also Thomas C. Young later in the evening. Julia missed the day train and came in the night, arriving about 3 a.m.
Tuesday 12: C. C. Richards and Josce West and later Robert Young came. The Funeral was held at 3 p. m. in the Meetinghouse with a house full. The speakers were L. H. Kennard, Benjamin Lillywhite, Bishop James H. Hess, Jedediah M. Hess, Joseph H. Welling and Alfred Capener. All was said and done that could be to help and comfort us. Resolutions of respect were read by the principals also. Ralph and Mary Ann came with the teem full at night. The corpses were brought here to Julia’s for the night. There were a lot of beautiful flowers presented.
Wednesday 13: We the family went and took the corpse to Brigham to be buried. We arrived at the Cemetery at 2:20 p.m. and the burial took place about 3 p.m. We then all went to Young’s to stay overnight, weather fine.
Thursday 14: Julia, John, Ralph and I returned home the other children stoping a while at 3 Mile. The people turned out and washed and cleaned for us. They were all as kind as they could be, some clouds. Amelia Peart stoped to help Julia a few days.
Friday 15: We started to dig potatoes, killed a hog, cloudy, sprinkled a little and cleared away.
Saturday 16: We dug potatoes, cloudy at night, but cleared off, weather, very mild.
Sunday 17: I attended Meeting. William A. Hess, John C. Smith and Jesse Mason were present as Missionaries and addressed us, some winds.
Monday 18: We dug potatoes, cloudy.
Tuesday 19: We worked at the potatoes for the Relief Society.
Wednesday 20: John, Ralph and I worked at the potatoes, the 2 Bowcutt boys helped us, cloudy, threatened storm, we finished digging.
Thursday 21: We chored around getting ready to ship potatoes.
Friday 22: We started to ship potatoes, haul the Relief Society’s to Collinston and part of ours, cloudy.
Saturday 23: We finished hauling potatoes to Collinston.
1901: November, Sunday 24: I attended Meeting and Teacher’s Meeting, also a meeting to see what could be done about buying seat seats for out Meetinghouse. Myself and M. E. Porter were appointed to investigate and buy some seats.
Monday 25: We chored around home, cloudy.
Tuesday 26: John and I plowed Ralph’s lot over and picked some more potatoes, cloudy, mild.
Wednesday 27: M. E. Porter and I went to Logan in morning to arrange for Meeting house seats. John went on cars, Ralph and Julia came over in evening with teem, cloudy. We stoped at Phoebe’s. Frank Peart got married to Bertha Kent.
Thursday 28: We went and took Jacob and Phebe and Mariner Peart to Lewiston to attend the Wedding Reception. We arrived at Kent’s about 7 p.m. Enjoyed the evening nicely, had a fine supper, Cloudy and warm. We, Julia and I, stoped at James Anderson’s after the do was over.
Friday 29: We drove back to Logan and Julia and I came home, Ralph and John stoped in Logan, rained some.
Saturday 30: I chored around the forenoon and went to Perry in the afternoon. Cloudy but mild. I arrived at Perry about 6:30 p.m., found Bell’s children all well.
December, Sunday 1: I started home with Maggie, Elmer, Florence and Glen. Hyrum stopping to go to school at Perry. Arrived home about 2:15 p.m., too late for Meeting. Robert Young was here. He went on to Portage. I attended Conjoint Meeting in the evening.
Monday 2: John and I worked with teem at School House clearing up around ½ day. Cloudy, rained in evening. School started in the newHhouse. We held a Meeting to authorize the Ecclesiastical Trustee to deed Church Property to the Bishop, of the _____ 4 members present.
Tuesday 3: I chored around home helping Julia clean house and fishing around. Rained most of day and at night.
Wednesday 4: I worked one day single handed on coal shed for District, cloudy, stormed some. George Austin came, I went to Garland to Meeting with him.
Thursday 5: I worked around home, cloudy.
Friday 6: I worked on coal shed ½ day, cloudy. I attended Primary Meeting.
Saturday 7: George Austin was here and held Meeting in the interest of Beet Sugar business to see who wanted to raise beets, promised a Sugar Factory for this valley in the summer of 1903 if the people will grow the beets, cold, snowed some. I and Ralph worked on the coal shed 3 hours each, cold north wind. Brother Austin started home.
Sunday 8: I attended Sunday School and Meeting. We held them in the new School House because we had no seats in the Meeting House. Elders John L. Fish and Charles Swallow also Peter Camp were with us at both Meetings and addressed us. Julia and I went to Fielding. Spent the evening at Bishop Hess’s, cloudy and cold.
Monday 9: Julia and I went to Collinston. We had a talk with D. Friday, snowed most of day and at night. Courtney Richards and a gentleman with him came stoped over night, squally.
Tuesday 10: Courtney Richards and friend went down the valley on their way home. John went teaching with Brother Benjamin Lillywhite, John’s first trip of the kind. I chored around home in forenoon, ground white with snow and still cloudy.
1901: December, Wednesday 11: I worked on coal house 6 hours, cold north wind.
Thursday 12: John and I killed hogs, cold north wind in morning, moderated some in afternoon, clear and cold at night.
Friday 13: I chored in the house most of day, it was very cold, south wind. Sunday School benefit dance was a failure, cutting up hogs.
Saturday 14: John and I worked at School House leveling up around the House with teem, 4 hours each, cloudy, mild.
Sunday 15: I attended Meeting. There was not a very large attendance but a good spirit present. We held Acting Teacher’s Meeting, cold and frosty.
Monday 16: Chored around home, cold and some fog.
Tuesday 17: We sacked some potatoes and I took them to Tom Caver at Collinston to apply on my debt? $8.27.
Wednesday 18: The other 2 School Trustees came and we visited the Riverside School in forenoon and went and visited the Schools in the afternoon at Fielding. We found all the Schools in the District in an excellent condition. We held a Board Meeting in the evening, warm and pleasant.
Thursday 19: The day appointed to receive Tithing, none came in till night.
Friday 20: I went to Collinston in forenoon, shipped chickens to Salt Lake City. I went to Fielding to Teacher’s Institute in afternoon, very cold east wind at Fielding.
Saturday 21: I went to Fielding and attended 2 Meetings of our Stake Conference, cold and windy. Tom Young came stoped with us.
Sunday 22: We went to Fielding, attended two Meetings, Apostle John W. Taylor and Rulin S. Wells were present at Conference and gave us valuable instructions, denounced spiritualism, hypnotism, Christian Science and kindred working in the strongest terms. President O. C. Hoskins and John M. McCrary were absent on account of ill health. The Sisters took the afternoon train for home, foggy and damp.
Monday 23: Julia and Ralph took John to Collinston. John was going to Logan. I stayed home. Tom Young went home. Elmer went with him, south wind, thawing.
Tuesday 24: I stoped home all day choring around. Hyrum and Elmer came in the afternoon. Xmas Eve Santa Claus came and left some good things for the children, mild weather, sun shine, pleasant one here.
Wednesday 25: We were all at home, but John and had a Xmas dinner, It was a very dry dull Xmas, no snow.
Thursday 26: Mamie Abbott Turner was very sick. We were up most of the night with her, cold frost nights, warm days.
Friday 27: The Mutual Improvement Associations gave a Sociable for the married people of the Ward. There was a programme in forenoon and a dance at night for everyone. George Austin called and ordered dinner for 12 men for the next day.
Saturday 28: Weather warm and pleasant. The 12 men came and took dinner, then went out to the canal dam and to Logan. Teachers and Bishopric visited M. E. Porter about Hypnotism.
Sunday 29: I attended Meeting, denounced hypnotism. Went from here to Charles Turner’s, administered to his wife. She was very low. I sat up all night, she died at 4:30 a.m. The most horrible death, cold and frosty. Bishop ____ , Mrs. Evens and a rich man from the coast came and stoped with us.
Monday 30: I helped make arrangements for transportation and burial and I took the corpse to Collinston in my wagon. She was taken to Farmington for burial. They went on the evening train.
Tuesday 31: I settled some Tithing Accounts and did some contracting for sugar beets.
